Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum Airport (DWC) is the official name of Dubai's new 'super-airport'. Tipped to be the biggest and busiest airport in the world by many commentators, when operating at maximum capacity it could see some 160 million passengers through its doors each and every year. It will be the epicentre of the Dubai World Central project that is under development 20 miles or so south west of Dubai but crucially only around 5 miles from Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Jumeira. DWC will include huge residential developments, leisure complex, aviation and logistics districts that will serve the UAE. Officially the airport opened in June 2010, however this was limited to cargo whilst the airport founds it's feet and construction work continued on the passenger terminals, and still does now. It is not expected to be fully complete until 2017. October 2013 saw the eagerly awaited arrival of the first passengers, although despite the new super airport being designed to accommodate the world's largest passenger aircraft from the likes of BA, Etihad and Virgin, it was a rather more subtle affair which saw budget airport, Wizzair become the first to land passengers on its tarmac bringing 100 passengers from Budapest.
