Five men lost their appeals on Wednesday and will spend three years in jail each, for breaking into a villa in Dubai and stealing cash and valuables.
An Emirati housewife had accompanied her sick son to Thailand on a medical trip, when one of her servants notified her that her residence in Oud Al Mutaina had been burgled, in May 2016.

When she returned, the housewife discovered that cash and valuables worth thousands of dirhams were missing from her bedroom.
After reporting the matter to the Dubai Police, primary interrogations and crime scene investigators identified a Sri Lankan, 48, involved in the break-in.
The defendant was arrested and he led them to four of his countrymen, aged between 27 and 36.

The five said their 35-year-old countryman, a Dubai resident, flew them in for the purpose of forming a gang to break into empty villas and steal cash and valuables.
Court records said the defendants used a screwdriver to force their way into the woman’s villa, where they stole mobiles, electronics, gold items, diamond sets, jewellery, wrist watches and cash.
A police sergeant said following their arrest, the defendants claimed that their fugitive friend masterminded the whole thing. “They claimed that he flew some of them into Dubai specifically to carry out the heists. The accused said they used to knock on the doors of villas and when nobody responded, they would ensure the villas were empty, climb the walls, break in and steal cash and valuables,” said the sergeant.
Sentence increased
In July, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the defendants for six months each, for forcing their way into the villa and stealing.
The 35-year-old accused was sentenced in absentia to six months in jail.
Prosecutors appealed the primary judgement and asked the Appeal Court to stiffen the convicts’ punishment.
The defendants also appealed their primary sentence and sought a lenient punishment.
On Wednesday, presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm dismissed the defendants’ appeals and accepted that of the prosecutors, lengthening the six-month jail term to three years.
The five accused, who pleaded not guilty, will also be deported after their jail terms.
The appellate judgement remains subject to appeal before the Cassation Court.
