Residents in the UAE, who have spent the summer indoors, are now eagerly anticipating the exploration of less-traveled wadis, engaging in off-roading, and experiencing desert camping. However, UAE authorities are urging community members to be mindful of and adhere to safety regulations.

In an effort to enhance safety and preserve wildlife, Ras Al Khaimah Police have emphasized strict penalties for individuals involved in hazardous driving activities in the dunes. Offenders may face a substantial fine of Dh2,000, along with 23 traffic black points and a potential 60 days of imprisonment. These consequences apply to anyone driving in a manner that jeopardizes their safety, the safety of others, or poses a threat to public or private facilities.

Wilderness and desert areas are not to be treated as venues for reckless behavior, noise disturbances, or chaos. Authorities emphasize that driving recklessly within these natural spaces, without regard for safety and responsibility, will result in severe penalties.

To provide safer alternatives for recreational activities, racing, and energy release, the government has designated specific spaces. Residents are encouraged to utilize these specially created zones, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment for recreational pursuits while respecting the peace and harmony of wild landscapes.

These reminders follow Sharjah Police's decision to officially close the Al Faya dunes area after a tragic incident on November 17, where an Asian youth lost his life in an off-roading accident.

Fraser M. Martin, a professional driver, writer, and model car restorer, highlights a fundamental rule for off-roaders: "Remember that the best off-roaders are the ones who can navigate at the slowest pace without getting stuck—if you want to go fast across the desert, apply to Etihad Rail."

Many drivers may be unaware of the rules and risks associated with off-roading. While it is an adventure sport that requires specific skills, enthusiasts often venture into it unprepared.

Shibu Nair, an expert off-roader from Titan Performance, emphasizes the importance of safety and experience in off-roading. He advises against pushing one's limits and advocates for driving within one's ability.

Fundamental Guidelines for Off-Roading:

1. Safety in Numbers: Avoid off-roading alone for safety and practical reasons. Travel in a group or with at least one experienced off-roader in a separate vehicle to prevent challenging situations like extracting a stuck vehicle from the sand.

2. Plan Your Route: Before embarking on the trails, plan your route instead of driving without a clear agenda. It is crucial to ensure that your vehicle is trail-worthy before hitting the off-road paths.

3. Know Your Vehicle: While regular off-roaders are familiar with their vehicles and equipment, part-timers and inexperienced individuals may need a refresher on their vehicle's capabilities.

4. Physical Readiness: Ensure you are well-rested and in suitable medical condition before accelerating into off-roading. Recognize that it is an extreme sport with potential impacts on your well-being if proper precautions are neglected.

5. Capture Memories, Leave No Trace: Take pictures but leave only tracks. If camping in the desert, be responsible for your trash and know how to dispose of it properly.

Emong Ang, a leader of PWR52 Offroaders (Pinoy Pajero Club UAE), advises leaving ego behind to prevent harm to yourself or others, emphasizing that competitive events are designed for such pursuits.

Essential Off-Roading Kits:

1. First-Aid Box: Carry a first-aid kit to treat any cuts or wounds.

2. Shovel and Flat Board: Have a shovel and a flat, sturdy board to safely place a jack if you need to change a wheel.

3. Recovery Equipment: Include shackles, preferably soft shackles, for recovery situations.

4. Spare Tire: Ensure you have a spare tire in good condition.

5. Air Compressor: Carry an air compressor to manage tire pressure.

6. Jumper Cables: Include jumper cables in your kit.

7. Basic Tool Kit: Have a basic tool kit for minor repairs.

8. Fire Extinguisher: Include a fire extinguisher for safety.

9. Ample Water: Carry more water than you think you will need.

10. Tow Rope: Include either a Kinetic or snatch strap; at least one is essential for off-roading adventures.
