The official praised the Sharjah Ruler for his support in fighting the scourge, which primarily affects the youth.Sharjah is ramping up its fight against drugs and establishing a treatment and rehabilitation centre for addicts, in response to a directive of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
Major-General Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, said the force is communicating with concerned government authorities to establish the specialised centre, which will provide treatment services for addicts and other victims affected by their addiction. A suitable location for the centre is being identified.

The official praised the Sharjah Ruler for his support in fighting the scourge, which primarily affects the youth, who are the future of the country, and poses a threat to lives and safety.

An official at the Anti-Narcotics Department of the Sharjah Police said the centre - to be facilitated as soon as possible - will contribute in fighting drug crimes and provide the best treatment services. The Sharjah Police, in close cooperation with the other emirates' anti-narcotics departments, has seized large quantities of various drugs and directed strikes on abusers, traffickers and peddlers in the UAE.

The police have arrested a large number of defendants involved in drug cases - including trafficking, abuse and peddling of crystals, cannabis, heroin, opium, drug pills and other banned substances.

Drug cases and its frequency have relatively decreased due to the efforts of anti-narcotics teams, who work to reduce opportunities for smuggling and peddling in the county.

The Emirati society has been plagued by drugs and its dangerous effects on community members, the official noted. "It has cost the UAE government financially and the country in human and moral losses. We struggle with the trade and smuggling of drugs, which aims to destroy the youth, children, the society and its productive energies," the official said.

The police will launch awareness efforts on drugs and enable operations to rescue the victims. The campaigns will also aim to prevent the use of drugs, risk of addiction and the vulnerability of the country and the region, which is targeted due to its geographical location by drug traffickers. The UAE is a coveted target due to its wealth and high individual incomes, the official said. "Drugs began with a dose, end with addiction, then lead to death," he added.
