The UAE is witnessing a substantial surge in onion prices following India's announcement of an export ban until March next year to stabilize local prices. Retail industry leaders in the country are actively seeking alternative sources to meet the heightened demand as prices have increased sixfold.

Ashok Tulsiani, the Group FMCG Director at Al Safeer, confirmed the impact on onion exports, leading to a significant rise in retail prices. While Turkey, Iran, and China are considered potential alternatives, Tulsiani emphasized that Indian onions remain the preferred choice for customers due to their superior quantity, quality, and price.

Following a surge in onion rates to Rs70-80 per kg in New Delhi, India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) modified the export policy, restricting onion exports until March 31, 2024. The ban has also affected other neighboring countries in the Subcontinent and Gulf nations, causing a ripple effect on onion prices.

Kamal Vachani, the Group Director and Partner of Al Maya Group, stated that the ban has prompted the UAE to explore alternative countries to meet the onion demand. Egypt is being considered as a potential supplier, and Turkey is presented as an additional option to ensure a stable onion supply for consumers in the UAE. Vachani emphasized their commitment to maintaining market stability and meeting consumer demands through an expanded sourcing network.
