Some call her a “fighter” and others refer to her as “brave”. But Sonali Bendre, who is under treatment for cancer in the US, has always been truthful about her struggle with the condition she is suffering. In yet another honest post, the actress reveals how she keeps herself motivated in this trying time, and tries to move over the pain that she is in. 

Sonali, on her Instagram account, posted a note that started with an inspiring quote that read, “I knew that if I allowed fear to overtake me, my journey was doomed. Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves, and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me.” – Cheryl Strayed, Wild.

Then she detailed how over the past couple of months, she has faced both good and bad days. “There have been days when I’ve been so exhausted and in so much pain that even lifting a finger hurt. I feel like sometimes it’s a cycle… one that starts off with physical pain and leads to mental and emotional pain. The bad days have been many… Post chemo, post-surgery and the like… where even just laughing hurts,” read the post. Sonali also narrated in the note that there are days when she felt that cancer took everything she had to push past it – it was almost like a minute-to-minute battle with herself.  “I got through it knowing that even though I was fighting a long drawn out, draining battle… it was one that was worth the fight,” she further wrote. 

The actress, who is away from her family and friends in the US for her treatment, also gives an important teaching in her note that it’s important to remember that we’re allowed to have bad days. She stressed that forcing oneself to be happy and cheerful at all time serves no purpose. 

“I allowed myself to cry, to feel the pain, to indulge in self-pity… for a short while. Only you know what you’re going through and it is fine to accept it. Emotions aren’t wrong. Feeling negative emotions isn’t wrong. But after a point, identify it, recognize it and refuse to let it control your life,” the note read. 

Sonali reveals that it takes an immense amount of self-care to get out of the negative zone, and sleeping, having her favourite smoothie after chemo and just talking to her son, Ranvir, makes her feel good. Also read: Sonali Bendre twins in black with Anupam Kher as they bond over dinner

On July 4, Sonali had revealed on Twitter that she has been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment in New York City hospital. She was immediately showered with blessings and prayers from family, friends and members of the film industry.
