At Sharjah International Airport, a range of automated processes have been introduced to enhance the travel experience for passengers. From check-in and baggage drop to passport control and boarding, travelers have the option to handle these tasks independently using the airport's self-service facilities.

A spokesperson from the airport, speaking to Khaleej Times, mentioned that these self-service features are accessible to all Air Arabia passengers, regardless of their residency status. Here's how it operates:

Check-in:

  • Self-check-in kiosks are conveniently located at the airport. Passengers can approach a kiosk and either scan their passport or enter their Passenger Name Record (PNR).
  • Once their information is verified, the kiosk will print their boarding pass and bag tag.

Baggage Drop: Passengers can obtain their bag tag using the self-check-in kiosk. If they have completed online check-in, they can proceed to the 'Tag and Fly' kiosk to print their baggage tag and then head to the self-service baggage drop counter.

"In addition, just before the passport control area, an automated boarding card validator is available to expedite the process," noted the airport spokesperson.

Passport Control: This process is facilitated through smart gates.

  • Travelers place the photo page of their passport on an e-reader.
  • They then scan the barcode with the e-reader.
  • After these steps, they enter the smart gate, stand in the designated area, and have their image captured by a camera.
  • Once all the required procedures are completed, the smart gate will open automatically, allowing passengers to continue on their journey.

Boarding: Passengers can proceed to the new electronic gates for boarding the plane.

Smart Information Desk: The Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA) has introduced a 'smart information desk' that enables passengers and customers to have virtual interactions with airport customer service staff. "This initiative leverages innovative technologies to offer passengers more flexibility in accessing airport services," the spokesperson added.

According to the spokesperson, these smart travel procedures have contributed to reduced travel times for passengers. This has resulted in an increase in the number of passengers and flights served at the airport within a shorter time frame, ultimately enhancing the overall efficiency of the travel experience."
