A decision has been made by Federal Government Human Resources regarding the 2022 Eid Al Fitr holiday.

Eid Al Fitr holidays have been announced for UAE federal government employees.

In accordance with the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources, the break will be from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3.

Moon-sighting committees in the UAE will meet to confirm Eid's official start date.

The Islamic holiday of Eid Al Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal - the month which follows Ramadan in the Hijri calendar. According to astronomical calculations, Eid Al Fitr will fall on May 2 this year.

UAE residents will have Eid Al Fitr holidays from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3 according to the official UAE holidays list. Residents get four days off if Ramadan lasts 29 days, and five days off if the holy month lasts 30 days.

In 2022, Ramadan will likely last 30 days, which means residents may have a five-day break. Based on astronomical calculations, the holidays would likely be on Saturday, April 30, through Wednesday, May 4.

Recent announcements from the Emirates Astronomical Society indicate Eid Al Fitr will begin on May 2. However, how do astronomers determine the first day of Eid?

Hasan Al Hariri, CEO of Dubai Astronomy Group, said, By looking at the West and the thin crescent. He added the criterion is to find a thin crescent above the horizon after sunset in the direction of the West.

In explaining the process of Eid Al Ftir, Al Hariri noted that gazing up at celestial bodies, such as the Moon, can invoke feelings of reverence that can inspire contemplation of life's bigger picture.

According to him, Muslims look towards the western horizon for the new moon on the 29th day of Sha'ban, the eighth month.
