The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have moved a step closer to introducing a groundbreaking Schengen-style visa aimed at boosting tourism within the region.

During a recent meeting of GCC ministers in Muscat, Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, the Minister of Heritage and Tourism in Oman, announced the unanimous approval of the unified visa. This single visa will serve as a tourist's pass to explore the six-member Gulf bloc, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait. Multiple Gulf ministers and high-ranking officials, including those from the UAE, have indicated in recent months that the unified visa would be launched 'soon.'

What is a unified GCC visa?

Much like the Schengen visa, which grants tourists access to multiple European countries, the GCC aims to implement a visa that would enable visitors to travel seamlessly between the countries that constitute the Gulf bloc. Presently, tourists must obtain separate visas for the six Gulf countries, despite the fact that these destinations are connected by air and road.

How will the scheme benefit?

In May of this year, a senior UAE official emphasized the advantages of a unified package for tourists, particularly those traveling long distances, by making it easier to explore different countries within the GCC. The scheme is expected to extend the duration of their stays and stimulate higher levels of tourist expenditure.

When will the visa be launched?

Omani media quoted Minister Mahrouqi as stating that the scheme would be launched 'very soon.' Although a specific timeline was not provided, the Oman Observer reported that it will be presented at a meeting of regional interior ministers in November in Muscat.

What would the scheme entail?

Once implemented, the scheme may involve joint promotional campaigns among GCC countries. Officials have previously discussed the possibility of establishing a common booking platform and a shared tourism website.

Can residents of GCC countries apply for the visa?

Currently, citizens of GCC countries enjoy visa-free travel between the member states. It is not immediately clear whether expatriates residing in these countries can or will need to apply for the unified visa once it is implemented. However, last month, Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE Minister of Economy, mentioned that the GCC is considering a single visa system that would enable its residents to travel freely between member states.

How many countries can one visit with the visa?

Visa holders would have the opportunity to visit all six GCC countries: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait.

What will be the cost and duration of the visa?

The price and validity of the visa have not been disclosed thus far. More details are expected to be announced by the end of the year.
