The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP) is set to unveil a groundbreaking system, Akeed, designed to provide private sector entities with direct access to accurate resident data without the need for Emirates ID scanners. This innovation promises to usher in a new era of efficiency and convenience for businesses and residents alike. The launch of Akeed is scheduled for either later this year or early next year.

Akeed was introduced to the public during the Gitex Global technology exhibition, which took place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 16 to 20, 2023. The system's primary purpose is to eliminate the traditional reliance on card readers for obtaining information about residents and citizens from the ICP database, simplifying data retrieval processes across various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and insurance.

The ICP spokesperson at the Gitex stand explained, "Akeed is a forthcoming system designed to assist organizations in accessing essential information from the ICP database. For example, healthcare providers seeking an individual's name, passport details, or insurance policy information can easily retrieve it from the database. Akeed not only ensures the accuracy of data but also saves time for individuals and companies. Moreover, it will render card readers obsolete, eliminating the need to insert Emirates IDs into these devices."

This innovative system will cater to individuals who have already been issued residency permits and Emirates IDs. However, it remains unclear whether Akeed's services will be provided free of charge or involve a fee-based model.

Smart Initiatives Unveiled
The introduction of Akeed is just one of the several smart initiatives launched by the ICP during the Gitex Global event. Among these initiatives is a pioneering project involving self-service kiosks designed to enable both UAE nationals and expatriates to renew their passports and Emirates IDs instantly. If successful, these kiosks will be strategically placed in high-traffic areas like airports and malls, ensuring that individuals can conveniently submit their biometrics, renew passports, and process Emirates IDs at any time, day or night.

Furthermore, the ICP has introduced a new system that streamlines border crossings at Al Ghuwaifat. This groundbreaking Smart Land Borders Crossing system allows motorists to cross the border without leaving their vehicles. To use this system, motorists need to have their vehicles registered in their names. The system scans the car's number plate, opens the first barrier for the driver, and then proceeds to scan passports, Emirates IDs, and biometrics or use facial recognition. Once the ICP system verifies the data, the second barrier opens, allowing motorists to exit the country with ease.

The ICP, originally established in 2004 as the "Emirates Identity Authority," has played a pivotal role in developing the population register and Emirates identity card program. Over time, its responsibilities expanded to include citizenship affairs, passports, and the entry and residence of foreigners in the UAE. These functions have been effectively transferred to the ICP, streamlining various identity and documentation processes for residents and expatriates in the country.
