Divorced husband alleges mother deliberately burnt child, police charge mother
Sharjah: Sharjah Police have charged a mother who is alleged to have burnt her son’s hand with a cigarette.
An official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News on Monday that the mother has been charged with negligence and assault on her son following allegations by her divorced spouse who complained to authorities.
The boy’s father brought the son to the hospital claiming that his son was burnt by his former wife.
The incident came to the light on Monday when the father took his son from Child Protection Department.
The couple of Arab nationality divorced last year over marital issues and the full custody of the boy was given to the mother.
The father went to Child Protection Department to pick up his son under provisions of UAE laws that a divorced spouse with partial custody has the right to meet their children for one or two times a week under programme dubbed “Vision”.
Under the programme, the parent with full custody hands over the children to the other spouse under supervision of child protection staff in the morning and then they return the child in the evening under the supervision of the department staff.
When the father took his son for a visit, he noticed that there was a burn sign on the hand of his son who is one year and seven months old.
The boy was scared and crying and did not want go to his mother, the father told authorities.
The father said that his former wife suffered from psychological issue and she could not control herself when she became angry.
The couple followed parental law and the father requested the authorities to intervene and withdraw custody of the child from her and that she should face legal action according to Wadeema law.
The father contended that his son suffered physical and psychological torture.
The father said he would submit evidence to the court to win custody of his son.
Medical staff at a hospital reported the issue to the Child Protection Department and a medical report indicated that the sign on the boy’s hand is a burn from a cigarette.
Wasit Police is investigating the incident and the mother will be summoned for interrogation.
Sharjah Police and the social service department will investigate the circumstances of the incident, official said.
