Three Asians have been sentenced to one year in jail by the Sharjah Criminal Court for posing as police officers and kidnapping a woman after pushing her inside a car and then robbing her. The trio will be deported after serving their jail terms.

The details of the case came to the fore when the victim lodged a complaint with the Sharjah Police. The criminal investigation department (CID) sleuths launched a probe and swung into action to nab the trio.

The men were arrested from different locations and thoroughly interrogated. They confessed to their crime to the police and were referred to the public prosecution.

During police interrogation, the trio confessed that they had met the victim in the industrial area while impersonating as cops. They asked the woman for her identity card and forcing her inside the car. The three headed to Ras Al Khaimah and then Fujairah where the woman was robbed of her belongings and money. After robbing the woman, the three dropped her at some remote location, they said.

A police officer - who was a part of the probe team - testified before the court and said he went to Industrial Area 18 and caught hold of the first convict after the victim identified him. The first convict led him to the second convict's hideout - an apartment in Abu Shagara area in Sharjah. The third man couldn't be located and so a circular was issued, which helped the cops arrest him later.

During the court hearing while they were confronted, the men denied the charges attributed to them, and retracted on the confessions they had made before the police and the prosecution.
The lawyer of the first convict requested the court to acquit his client of the charges. The defendants denied witnesses testimonies, dubbing them as false.

They also claimed that were beaten up by the police and that the confessions were extracted by force.
