The usage of virtual private networks (VPNs) has grown significantly in the UAE and Gulf region, primarily to access restricted content and download audio-video calling apps.

Recent data from Nord Security indicates that demand for VPNs in Gulf regions grew by approximately 30% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. In the UAE, demand for VPNs grew by 36%, reflecting a growing number of internet users accessing banned content.

The use of VPNs is prevalent among Gulf residents for making audio-video calls through popular apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, Facetime, Discord, and IMO, as well as dating apps. In addition, VPNs are used to access restricted content such as dating, gambling, pornography, drugs, and VoIP websites.

According to Ashish Mehta, managing partner at Ashish Mehta & Associates, using VPN in the UAE is not illegal if it follows the guidelines set by the UAE government and the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). TDRA stated in a 2016 statement that VPNs may be used by companies, institutions, and banks for internal purposes.

As content restrictions continue to appear, the demand for VPN services is expected to increase further in the Gulf region. Despite this trend, it's important to adhere to local laws and regulations and use VPNs responsibly.
