Any time you visit a new country, it is very important to stay aware of its laws. It seems that Dubai has gotten a lot of bad press with regard to local laws, but all of it has really been about arrogance or misbehavior by the tourists who don't understand local laws.

Although Dubai is part of the UAE, UAE is fairly ahead of its counterparts when it comes to freedom, but Sharia law is still followed in this part of the country.

There are a few things you need to know about Dubai as a tourist.

1. Dress Code

If you're going to conservative areas or in public, dress modestly. Visitors should cover up elsewhere but may wear swimwear at private beaches or around private swimming pools. Women should wear headscarves when visiting mosques.

2. Public Display of Affection (PDA)

Dubai is against public displays of affection with the opposite sex, so you shouldn't be kissing, canoodling, or fondling the opposite sex in public. Whether it's with your spouse or not, it will still be considered an offense. Pecking your spouse on the cheek or holding hands is fine!

3. Swearing & Hand Gestures

Hand gestures in Dubai can cause you to be fined, put in prison, or deported- depending on who you flick the bird to.

Swearing at someone in Dubai is also illegal- whatever happens keep your cool and don’t get into any form of altercation.

4. Getting drunk

You may also be fined, imprisoned, or deported if you are drunk in public in Dubai.

If you want alcohol, you can buy it in restaurants licensed to sell it (most restaurants in Marina and on Sheikh Zayed Road do), but be careful about your behavior. Dubai has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving!

5. Photography

The photography is fine, snap away, take plenty of selfies, and keep your batteries charged. Make sure you ask before taking a photograph of a UAE national or resident, especially if she is a woman.

You need to be aware that some places, such as the Grand Mosque, do not allow selfies or photos.

6. Other Rules & Regulations

1. Your passport or some other form of government identification should always be with you.

2. You should not shake hands with the women of Emirati culture. You should be courteous when you meet them and wait for them to extend their hands or to nod when they see you.

3. Be sure not to litter or jaywalk. There are policemen in civilian clothes at most of the junctions and those who litter and jaywalk are fined.

4. It is strictly forbidden to consume food or beverages on public transport (Metro, Bus, Cab).

5. The above tips should make your stay in Dubai as smooth and hassle-free as possible.
