Dubai: Are you experiencing problems renewing your Emirates ID even though it has expired? Residents have been informed of how to apply for an exemption from the late payment fees by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICA).

Late payment fees: what is the amount?

UAE government websites state that the cardholder has 30 days to renew an Emirates ID once it has expired without incurring a fine.

Late fines up to Dh1,000 will be assessed after this point.

To whom does the exemption apply?

The ICA specifies that any of the following individuals can apply for the exemption:

1. Residents of the United Arab Emirates

2. Citizens of the GCC

3. Expatriates

Are there criteria for applying for exemptions?

For those who failed to get their Emirates ID cards or those of those under their sponsorship within the timeframe stipulated by the ICA, can apply for an exemption from late fines if they satisfy one of the following criteria:

1. If an individual has fled the UAE and lived outside the country for more than three months. Or, if an individual's residency has expired while abroad, or if the validity of one's ID card has expired since leaving the UAE. This must be established with the travel document.

2. An individual whose ID card has expired while overseas as a result of an executive or judicial order, or whose passport is pending renewal because of an ongoing case. In the case of passport renewal or detention, he will need to present an official letter from the relevant authorities.

3. Persons suffering from contagious diseases, partial or full disabilities, or bedridden. An official medical certificate from the relevant authorities in the country is required to prove this.

4. The diplomatic or consular staff in the country and those under their care.

5. Those over 70 who are unable to visit customer service centers. Any authentic document - such as a family book, passport, etc. - must be used to prove their age.

6. Those entitled to social security, as well as those sponsored by them, must provide a certificate issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs or another authority proving their status.

7. Individuals who were not issued an ID card during the period before they received UAE citizenship or family books.

8. Delays in registering or issuing ID cards resulting from mismatches in documents or problems with Emirates ID's systems, one of its employees or one of the typing offices it assigned.

What are the steps to file for the fine exemption?

Through Online Process

A fine exemption can be requested by logging onto the ICA website - ica.gov.ae , or by downloading the 'ICA UAE' app for Apple and Android smartphones.

Sign in to the system using your UAE Pass or create an account through the website or app.

Through customer happiness centres

You can also apply for the exemption through any of the ICA’s customer happiness centres, if you are unable to complete the application process online.

How long will the process take?

ICA's website says that after an application is submitted, it is verified, and a decision will be given to you within 48 hours on whether you have been approved or rejected.
