Dubai Municipality is embarking on a comprehensive development plan for community markets within labor areas, which includes the establishment of two new markets and the renovation of an existing one. The first, spanning 16,000 square feet, will be located in Al Quoz 3, while the second, covering 9,200 square feet, will be situated in Muhaisanah 2. Furthermore, the existing 14,000-square-foot market in Al Quoz 4 will undergo refurbishment.
These markets offer a variety of products, including ready-to-eat food, fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, clothing, shoes, perfumes, mobile phones, electronics, as well as services like barbers and tailors. The pricing is kept affordable to cater to the labor community, with a focus on maintaining high standards of health, safety, and food safety. Beyond their commercial purpose, these markets serve as social hubs, providing laborers with a space to relax and unwind after a long day at work. For instance, the market in Al Quoz 4 is a popular destination for snooker and carom games, all available at a cost of less than Dh10. In 2022, the Dubai Municipality and the police jointly inaugurated the first officially licensed market within a labor zone. This initiative effectively curtailed the presence of illegal pop-up markets by providing an exclusive shopping venue for laborers.
Dr. Naseem Rafie, Director of the Health and Safety Department, articulated, "The Dubai Municipality has devised a comprehensive strategy for the enhancement of community markets in industrial areas and labor accommodations. The strategy aims to strengthen our social responsibility towards laborers by establishing a secure and distinctive shopping environment, addressing their needs while adhering to the highest standards of public health, occupational safety, and proactive preventive measures."
