Authorities have announced an auction in Abu Dhabi where 787 vehicles of various models were sold for prices ranging from Dh2,000 to Dh255,000.
A report on Thursday from Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) reported that it had conducted these car auctions at the Al Mafraq vehicle impound area over the past three months, which generated a total of Dh18.6 million.
With over 1,200 bidders registered to take part in the five-car auctions, there was fierce competition for the cars on sale and the value of the cars was paid for with bank cards and bank transfers.
To facilitate the purchasing procedure, the court system allowed bidders to pick up the purchased cars immediately after the closing of the sale, allowing pre-sale inspections of the cars one day ahead of the sale, and completing the procedures and delivering the cars to their new owners on the same day, while ensuring that all parties were treated fairly.
In order to ensure transparency, clarity, and impartiality, as well as to safeguard the rights of all interested parties, the auctions were entirely supervised by the specialized staff of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, in conjunction with the General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police.
Most of the vehicles included in the auction had been seized by authorities after the owners abandoned them on public streets for an extended period and after a grace period, they failed to claim them.
A vehicle left on a roadside or in a public square is subject to a fine of Dh3,000, as well as impoundment.
Streets and parking lots are inspected daily by the municipality's inspectors. When a violation is seen, the vehicle is monitored for two weeks. Owner notification is posted on the vehicle at the end of the 14-day period, asking for it to be removed as soon as possible. At the end of 24 hours, the car is towed.
