Due to the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) initiatives in the UAE and expected certification developments next year, individuals may soon have the chance to bypass traffic and traverse the Emirates, saving 40% of their time.

The UAE is on the brink of witnessing the realization of all-electric air taxis in its skies by the first quarter of 2026. Discussing the benefits of introducing electric aviation to the UAE, Eng. Ruba Abdelal, Chief Specialist and Innovative Mobility Expert for the UAE Government, emphasized that it would alleviate congestion with zero emissions.

She stated, “The first one is the time efficiency, so imagine traveling from one point to another without having to deal with traffic congestion or having to deal with intersections and waiting on traffic lights and roundabouts. Movement of people within cities is going to be much easier. You will save at least 40% of your time which can lead to increased productivity.”

Abdelal also pointed out that innovation in this sector would positively impact other sectors, saying, “Another benefit is to connect to areas that are hard to reach. Importantly, it will also enhance emergency response.”

Policy work is set to commence next year, according to Omran Hassan Malek, Senior Specialist in Policy and Regulation and Advanced Air Mobility Project Manager at the General Civil Aviation Authority in the UAE. He highlighted the collaborative efforts and preparations, ensuring regulations are in place, and the airspace is ready for the anticipated arrival of the future of air mobility in the first quarter of 2026.

Malek acknowledged potential resistance to the introduction of new transportation methods but anticipated that within the next five years, air taxis would become a common mode of transportation.

Earlier collaborations, including that between Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and Archer, paved the way for the endorsement of Archer’s fully electric air taxi service in the UAE. Abu Dhabi has committed to being the inaugural partner, aiming for a 2026 launch.

The introduction of air taxis is expected to attract significant foreign direct investment and generate thousands of jobs in the region within the next decade.

Balkiz Sarihan, CEO of Airbus Urban Mobility and Head of UAM Airbus, emphasized that electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and advanced air mobility would provide an additional transportation option, not a replacement, based on individual mobility preferences.

Highlighting the challenges ahead, Borja Blond, CEO of Advance Air Mobility Operator, emphasized the key role authorities play in ensuring the safety of operations. He noted that understanding the complexity of the entire system, a different approach to maintenance, and comprehensive pilot training are crucial aspects that need consideration.
